Bob and Verna Jean Holman opened Bob’s Drive-In on July 3, 1949. We only sold Dairy Queen products. In 1954 we decided that we needed to add sandwiches to the menu. Dairy Queen National informed us that we would have to discontinue selling sandwiches. They did not allow food to be sold in a Dairy Queen store. We continued with our plans to add sandwiches and it turned out to be very successful. Our business grew at a rapid pace. We won a Dairy Queen National Contest in 1958 for having the greatest increase per gallon usage of ice cream over the previous year of 1957. We had a 77% increase that year. We were probably one of the first to put food in a Dairy Queen.
In 1960, we changed out name to Bob’s Drive-In. The business kept growing and by 1965 it was about to get the best of me. I decided that I needed to sell the business. When one day a former employee of mine, Shirley Wagger, called my wife and asked her if we would consider selling the drive-in. We were quick to say yes. We sold Bob’s Drive-In to Frank and Shirley Wagger and they operated it very successfully until 1978 when they sold it to Neil Ward, the present owner.
Neil has done a great job with the drive-In. It makes me proud to see this business still flourishing after 59 years. Not many businesses can say that. Best wishes to you, Neil Ward!!
